De film vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van het BP-boorplatform Deepwater Horizon dat in 2010 het gezicht werd van een ecologische ramp in de Golf van Mexico. Het beruchte Britse booreiland vloog in brand en explodeerde op 20 april 2010 tijdens boringen. Er kwamen 11 bemanningsleden om het leven en veroorzaakte de grootste olieramp in de geschiedenis van de Verenigde Staten.
