This new series is the first to use first-hand testimony and to feature exclusive interviews with one of the Wests' early victims, their family members and those close to the couple. It also uses dramatic reconstructions to fully explore their young lives in an attempt to find out what led Fred and Rose to become murderers and examines how the couple were able to claim so many lives without being detected by the authorities.
This opening film reveals the events in Fred and Rose West's early lives which led to their becoming murderers, starting with their chance meeting at a bus stop in Cheltenham when she was 15 years old and he was 27. The programme also explores whether the couple's abusive behaviour was rooted in their childhoods.
As a teenager, Fred suffered two serious head injuries, the first in a motorcycle accident when he collided with a cyclist. Fred was unconscious for over a week before coming round. Soon afterwards, he fell from a fire escape and once more hit his head. Fred's family claim that his personality changed after these injuries, but did these events help to turn him into a murderer?
Experts also examine claims that Rose was damaged by her father, a violent man who is believed to have abused her throughout her childhood. Could this have contributed to her becoming an eventual rapist and murderer?
The programme also reveals for the first time how Glasgow's feared razor gangs hounded Fred West from Scotland because he was said to be a paedophile.
