Het nieuwe album van de Schot James Yorkston is net uit. En wat een album het is. Geproduceerd samen met David Wrench, maar wel volledig zelf opgenomen in zijn zolderstudio in Cellardyke aan de oostkust van Schotland.

Op het album staan drie nummers waarbij de tekst niet gezongen maar gesproken wordt. De begeleiding lijkt op een militaire begeleiding met strakke ritmes waarin drie stemmen elkaar vinden. aillant detail is dat één van de “stemmen” niet in staat was zichzelf te redden van zelfvernietiging vlak na de opnames.

De titel betekent, voor James Yorkston, de zoektocht naar vrede (nee, niet naar een ouderwets orgel, hoewel dit wel gebruikt wordt op het album). Het is een persoonlijk document waarin huidige en voormalige vrienden en familieleden kalmpjes door zijn muziek zwemmen. Het is zijn wereld en hij laat je binnen. 

Zelf zegt hij over het album: “I guess, as a musician and writer, I find myself reacting to what goes on around. So, this album is about life, the life that carries on around me. There’s family, place, and the being away from family that the life of a touring musician brings… But there’s also reference to friends departed – the hows, the whys – When a friend jumps ship it’s always a haymaker to the gut, you know? And this album is about them, but it’s more about us, us who are left behind...”.

Ik ben bovenmatig onder de indruk.
